Abî Planter
The Abi Planter was designed as a quiet tribute to my grandma and her Abi—the traditional woven straw bag of the Tboli people of South Cotabato, Philippines. I remember it as something both practical and deeply beautiful, carried over the shoulders or balanced behind the head, moving with women as they farmed, foraged, and walked the mountain slopes.
This planter draws from the Abi’s softened form and grounded presence. Its silhouette echoes the gentle taper and weight of a well-used basket—sturdy, humble, and shaped by purpose. The surface texture is intentionally raw and earthy, honouring the natural materials of traditional Tboli basketry: rattan, bamboo, and abaca fibre, often woven with patience and care.
Once tools for daily life, these baskets are now recognised as artworks—objects that carry stories, labour, and dream-like patterns passed through generations. The Abi Planter carries that same spirit: functional, sculptural and rooted in memory.
Designed to hold medium to large plants, it sits comfortably in lived-in spaces—homes that value craft, history, and quiet storytelling. Each piece is a reminder that everyday objects can be vessels of culture, memory, and care.
